Dove prism is a reflective optical element shaped from a truncated right-angle prism.

Key Functions:

Image rotation & inversion: A transmitted image is inverted 180°; if the prism is spun about its longitudinal axis, the image rotates at twice the mechanical angle, enabling precise beam/image steering without additional optics .
Retro-reflection / beam folding: With only one internal reflection, the prism can act as a compact retro-reflector for collimated light .

Because Dove prisms rely on total internal reflection they must be used with clean, collimated or nearly parallel beams; converging light introduces astigmatism .

1. What is a Dove Prism?

2. How does image rotation work?

A:
When the prism is rotated around its longitudinal axis, the image rotates at twice the mechanical angle of the prism. For example, rotating the prism 30° causes a 60° image rotation.

A:
Dove prisms are designed for collimated (parallel) light. Using converging or diverging beams introduces significant aberrations such as astigmatism.

9. How critical is cleanliness?

The two short faces rely on total internal reflection (TIR); fingerprints or dust will frustrate TIR and create stray light. Keep these faces clean or request a protected-metal coating.

Yes, but the field of view is limited by the prism aperture and must be < dimension A / dimension C to avoid vignetting.
